While the world was still reeling from the aftermath of World War II, Willy Breitling conceived the Premier series as a remedy to alleviate the austerity of the time. During that era, watches were professional tools used by aviators, navigators, and engineers. No one understood this better than Willy, whose expertise lay in precision chronographs.
However, as a man of exceptional personal style, Willy also sought to elevate watches into elegant accessories, much like the captivating black-and-white films that conveyed optimism despite the turbulent times. His Premier series debuted in 1943, retaining all the functionality of his precise chronographs but with added sophistication.
Today, luxury Swiss watchmaker Breitling has introduced the Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42, once again embodying this spirit. The complex craftsmanship of the tourbillon is both challenging and aesthetically pleasing, making it the centerpiece of the new trio of exceptional timepieces.
"The Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42 is a perfect embodiment of Breitling's exceptional design and technical expertise," said CEO Georges Kern. "In the tourbillon, you can see the mechanism ticking away every second. It is the powerhouse of the watch."
Purposeful and stylish
Within the tourbillon, the balance wheel, balance spring, and escapement mechanism housed in a rotating carriage keep the entire assembly running perpetually. This serves to correct (and effectively eliminate) the pull of gravity, which can affect the accuracy of watches in different ways at different locations.
Breitling collaborated with the specialist movement manufacturer Manufacture La Joux-Perret to develop the B21 caliber, which combines the tourbillon with a chronograph, a rare feat that sets these three watches apart.
The use of precious metals and an open-case back are key features of the Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42. There are three variations, each named after one of Breitling's founding members. The "Léon Breitling" special edition features an 18K solid red gold case, a silver dial, and a brown alligator leather strap. The "Gaston Breitling" special edition is crafted with an 18K solid white gold case and a smoky grey dial, paired with a black alligator leather strap. The "Willy Breitling" special edition is made of pure platinum and comes with an Admiral Blue dial and a black alligator leather strap. Each watch features stylish rectangular pushers and Arabic numerals – hallmarks of the Premier series.
The symmetrical dial layout, complementary numerals, and matching color schemes all converge around the undisputed star – the tourbillon positioned at 12 o'clock – perfectly showcased. The open sapphire crystal case back, with its curved design, offers a full view of the B21 caliber, with the balance wheel and tourbillon bridge in contrasting 18K gold.
The return of the Breitling Founders Squad
The launch of the Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42 marks the return of the Breitling Founders Squad, comprising Léon, Gaston, and Willy Breitling, who come to life in the new campaign for the Premier Tourbillon timepieces.
The three generations of founders each left their own legacy on the brand, and their imprints are still evident in every aspect of the watches. Léon was a masterful craftsman, setting new standards for precision. Gaston was an innovator, and his designs have become synonymous with modern chronographs. Willy was a man of impeccable taste, leading the watches from a utilitarian to a stylistic orientation.
The Premier B21 Chronograph Tourbillon 42 is designed for those who have a passion for watchmaking, its mechanical marvels, and its enchanting allure. Combining Breitling's precision craftsmanship, cutting-edge innovation, and high fashion, these three exceptional timepieces pay homage to the three Breitling founders and are sure to make them proud.
