The term “Impressionism” (impressionism) has reached its 150th anniversary. At this important milestone, we have the opportunity to look back at the profound impact brought by a small group of Parisian artists. They introduced a brand-new painting style, replacing studio creation with outdoor sketching, pursuing fleeting natural scenes rather than meticulous composition, depicting everyday subjects rather than lofty narratives, and capturing ephemeral moments instead of eternal images. The birth of Impressionism completely overturned centuries of European artistic tradition. This exhibition focuses on the radical creative impetus behind Impressionism and explores its seemingly endless expansion — artists from around the world traveled to Paris to study, then returned home to distill what they had learned, further driving the deeper development of this art movement.
The Worcester Art Museum embraced Impressionism early in its founding, pioneering a new artistic vision. Its collection of French and American Impressionist paintings has attracted many visitors. Early curators purchased works directly from Monet’s Paris dealer Durand-Ruel and acquired works from American Impressionist artists, making the museum one of the earliest in the U.S. to actively collect Impressionist works as contemporary art. Over the past 125 years, the collection has grown rich, covering the origins and rise of Impressionism in France and its subsequent spread to the U.S., Germany, and Northern Europe. This exhibition presents works by over 30 artists including Claude Monet (1840-1926), Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), Childe Hassam (1856-1935), and Max Slevogt (1868-1932). The works cover a wide range of themes, from Monet’s famous Giverny water lily pond to natural landscapes like the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in America, showcasing the development and styles of Impressionism in various countries.
This exhibition is organized and planned by the Worcester Art Museum.
