Exhibition Period: June 11, 2025 - September 29, 2025
Exhibition Venue: 3rd Floor Sunlight Exhibition Hall, Fubon Art Museum
The term "impressionism" marks its 150th anniversary. At this significant moment, we have the opportunity to revisit the profound impact of a small group of Parisian artists who introduced a groundbreaking painting mode. They replaced studio creation with outdoor plein air painting, sought momentary natural landscapes instead of meticulous compositions, depicted everyday subjects rather than lofty narratives, and captured fleeting moments rather than eternal images. The birth of Impressionism radically overturned centuries of European artistic tradition. This exhibition will focus on the radical creative drive behind Impressionism and explore its seemingly limitless extendability—artists from around the world traveled to Paris to study, then refined what they learned upon returning home, further advancing this artistic movement's far-reaching development.
From its inception, the Worcester Art Museum embraced Impressionism, opening up a new artistic perspective. The museum's collection of French and American Impressionist paintings has attracted many visitors. Early directors of the museum acquired works directly from Monet's Parisian dealer Durand-Ruel and from American Impressionist artists, making it one of the first museums in the United States to actively collect Impressionist paintings as contemporary art. Over the past 125 years, this collection has grown to not only cover the emergence and rise of Impressionism in France but also its expansion to the United States, Germany, and Scandinavia. This exhibition features the works of over 30 artists including Claude Monet (1840-1926), Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), Childe Hassam (1856-1935), and Max Slevogt (1868-1932). The artworks depict a wide range of subjects, from Monet's famous Giverny water lilies to the natural landscapes of the Grand Canyon's South Rim, showcasing the development and characteristics of Impressionism in various countries.
This exhibition is organized by the Worcester Art Museum.
